Scrum in Vietnam?

I recently had the chance to participate a ScrumMaster course hold by Jeff Sutherland. During the training break I asked him if he knows someone offering the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Course also in Vietnam. He referred to one of his collegues Pete Deemer who is working with Jeff Sutherland at the Scrum Training Institute. I had a look on the web site but I find India and Japan covered for the CSM only. I also got in touch with Bas Vodde one of the leading ScrumMaster Trainer in South-East Asia located in Singapore. I asked him in Twitter if he has some plans to offer CSM also in Vietnam but unfortunately (regarding the CSM and not the fact that he became father ;) ) he just became father. There are some plans for CSM in Vietnam but not fixed. So I wonder why there is no Scrum Trainer yet in Vietnam. It might be that Vietnam is not yet a “lucrative” target country to have CSM?

Our company started more than one year ago with some basic Scrum elements like the daily scrum. Before I got the CSM I doubted that Scrum would work in Vietnam due to different culture, attitudes and communication behaviors. After the CSM I am convinced that for Vietnam and our company Scrum would work fine. The only challenge is to convince the customer to change his kind of project management according our approach plus Scrum.

I started to train and apply a small team with Scrum but before introducing it I need to make awareness about what processes are and good for and why we need Scrum regarding communication, collaboration and coordination in distributed teams. Really basics to find the the understanding to change mind sets.

  1. In Vietnam, it’s very common for people to think that Agile and Scrum wouldn’t work because of traditional Vietnamese working styles. It’s not true at all, but it does take time, understanding, and very clear, repeated discussion of scrum to make it work.

  3. Hi, “why there is no Scrum Training in Vietnam yet?” was also my question a couple of months ago.

Thus, I decided to look around for some information. And there did have some informal, free course from EastAgile (http://www.implementingscrum.com/) a long time ago.

Nearby Vietnam, there were courses in Singapore and Philippine. And I wonder why there is no such course in Vietnam. Then I contacted direct with Scrum Alliances, and turns out that a lot of people wanted to give the very first class.

The biggest issue could be in the price, because in Singapore and Philippine, for 2-3 days training course, it took around 1500USD which is, at least to me, a very expensive for Vietnam companies. However, nice guy like Micheal Vizdos (http://www.implementingscrum.com/) told me that they very happy to reconsider the price if I could open a class for around 20-30 people.

That seems to be out of my ability, my private network is not strong enough to do so. And the conversation was left opened.

As conclusion, I like Scrum/Agile and want to spread its spirit in Vietnam, thus please contact me if you have the same thinking and let’s see what we can do.
